The original owner doesn't remember exactly when he bought it and as 55/Rad pointed out, there's not really a way to track down the recent serial numbers.Sorry guys.no juju there. The bikes are labelled in no particular fashion other than this: in the case of the imports, part of the number refers to the factory, but not size or year.

That data is in the part number, which is not stamped on the frame. In the case of the bikes finished or built in the states, the numbers are sequential and there aren't parts of serial numbers on similar bikes that will be similar, except by coincidence. The shop it originally came from should be able to track the number for you regardless of data of purchase. On our system, I enter a serial number, and the name of the person we sold it to pops up. I e-mailed Trek directly late last night to get help on this, and to their credit, it's now 11:05 AM EST and I've already swapped three e-mails with someone there. I was under the impression that the 'Captain America' paint scheme on my bike was used from 2001-2003 based on what I've seen from eBay listings online, but I'm told that my bike is in fact a 2001, based on the serial number.
